Banned Books Week

The ALA (American Library Association) is currently holding their annual banned books week. The ALA has observed banned books week, in the last week of September every year since 1982,  to celebrate the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular. While this is the American Library Association; I see no reason why we shouldn't attempt to celebrate this week, and bring to the fore its ideals, world wide.

No matter where you are in the world, there are people who will try and restrict your, and others, right to freedom of expression. The forces that attempt to restrict us, are often subtle, focusing on the shocking and (what they consider) distasteful. They can often seem to be doing good work, and obviously that is what they will claim they are doing. Remember though, even if you disagree with the content of a book, someone else may disagree with something you believe in. Disagreement does not, and should not mean that those you oppose should be silenced.

So go out there and support freedom of expression, find & read a book that has been banned!
